She parks
her shopping cart under one of the plane trees on General Artigas boulevard.
"Look, how beautiful they are," says the homeless lady to us and
points her finger at the top of a giant tree, where a flock of chirping birds
are gathered. She does not ask for money, just wants to share her feelings with
us.
While
photographing the Jacaranda trees, a
man sitting in front of his doorstep shouts at me. He waves with one hand and
holds a naturally coloured calabash gourd
in his other hand. I come down from the España
Boulevard to the side street
Edil Hugo Prato towards him. He introduces himself as Viktor and points to
a large-scale mural. “Look at that und
take a picture, it´s a secret tip,” says Viktor and adds that the time of
the year, when the pale-violet flowers of the Jacaranda trees bloom, is for him the most beautiful. “Just a couple more days and then I have to
wait a year again,” he murmurs and looks up and down the blooming street.
Another
day we try to find one of the favourite coffee places of the local scene, Café Nómade. We walk past young people,
who have put almost the entire living room furniture on the sidewalk. They sit
on various couches, listen to hip-hop and grill a huge piece of beef. Nobody
complains about it, nobody really cares. Unfortunately Café Nómade is closed. The Saturday party probably lasted till the
early hours and left a big chaos behind, which we see through the window. Just
as we cross the road to the other side, a young man from Café Nómade runs after us. Although they are closed, he would make
us a coffee, if we want. However, he would rather recommend the Café Tero in the nearby and spacious Rodó Park.
It is
possible to spend hours in the Rodó Park in
nice weather. This about forty-hectare green space is visited by people of all
age groups at the weekend. People picnic in the shade of tall palms, sit around
fountains, watch the outdoor theatre, take a boat ride on an artificial lake,
and children shout cheerfully on the merry-go-rounds. Punks, homeless people,
students, families with children and pensioners share the public space in
unbelievable harmony.
The National Gallery of Uruguay Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales is also situated
in the Rodó Park. It exhibits works of the most famous local artists such as Juan Manuel Blanes, Carlos Federico Sáez, Pedro Figari,
Rafael Barradas or Joaqín Torres
García. The National Gallery is definitely worth visiting
regardless of the weather. We do not have to pay any admission fee. Maybe
because of that, the gallery is visited not only by tourists but also by locals
as well.
Pod jedným
z platanov na bulvári General
Artigas má odstavený svoj nákupný vozík. "Pozrite, aké sú krásne," znenazdajky sa nám prihovára
pani bez domova a jej ukazovák smeruje na vrchol obrovského stromu, kde sa
zhŕkol kŕdeľ štebotajúcich vtákov. Nepýta od nás drobné, len sa chce podeliť o zážitok.
Počas fotenia stromov Jacaranda na mňa pokrikuje pán sediaci
na vlastnom priedomí. Jednou rukou kamsi máva a v druhej drží
kalabasu na maté. Z bulváru España
k nemu schádzam po schodoch na bočnú ulicu Edil Hugo Prato. Predstaví sa ako Viktor a ukazuje na
veľkoplošný mural. "Pozri, tento si
odfoť, to je tajný tip" hovorí a dodáva, že čas, keď bledofialovými
kvetmi zakvitnú stromy Jacaranda je
preňho najkrajším časom roka. "Už
len pár dní a opäť si musím rok počkať," zosmutnie a potom
si s pôžitkom v očiach premeriava vlastnú ulicu posiatu týmito
stromami.
Pri hľadaní Cafe Nómade prechádzame popri
mládežníkoch, ktorí si na chodník vyniesli takmer celú obývačku. Posedávajú na
gaučoch, počúvajú hip-hop a grilujú obrovský kus hovädzieho mäsa. Nikto sa
nesťažuje, nikomu to nevadí. Cafe Nómade má
zavreté. Cez sklo výkladu vidíme veľkú spúšť spôsobenú sobotňajšou party.
Akurát keď prechádzame na druhú stranu cesty, vybehne za nami mladý muž
a hovorí, že ak chceme, urobí nám kávu. Skôr by nám však odporúčal inú
kaviareň- Cafe Tero v neďalekom
a priestrannom parku Rodó.
V parku Rodó sa dá za pekného počasia stráviť aj
niekoľko hodín. Tento asi štyridsať hektárový zelený priestor v nedeľu
popoludní využívajú na oddych takmer všetky vekové kategórie. Ľudia piknikujú
v tieni vysokých paliem, posedávajú okolo fontán, sledujú divadlo, vozia
sa v člnkoch na jazere... Z kolotočov k nám dolieha veselý
detský džavot. Punkáči, bezdomovci, rodiny s deťmi aj dôchodcovia navzájom
zdieľajú verejný priestor v neuveriteľnom súlade.
V parku Rodó sa nachádza aj Národná Galéria Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales s exponátmi
najznámejších umelcov a umelkýň krajiny ako napr. Juan Manuel Blanes,
Carlos Federico Sáez, Pedro Figari, Rafael Barradas či Joaqín Torres García.
Národnú galériu sa oplatí navštíviť nezávisle od počasia. Počas našej návštevy
neplatíme žiadne vstupné a asi aj vďaka tomu galéria žije nielen turistami ale aj miestnymi.
