The Penguins of Simon´s Town

On the way to the Cape of Good Hope, we make a stop at Simon´s Town. Along the elevated wooden promenade rare African penguins, which are smaller than their relatives from Antarctica, hide in the bushes. Gradually, we discover introverted individuals resting alone, couples in love but also the whole groups on Foxy beach. Some of them lazily wander on the beach while others throw themselves into the waves of the ocean. It is the time of the year, when they all lose gray tufts of feathers. They return to this favorite place not only during the molting period but during nesting as well.

Cape of Good Hope

In front of the entrance gate to Table Mountain National Park a growing convoy of cars already waits in the early morning. After paying the entrance fee (320 Rand per person), we travel for another fifteen minutes to the Cape of Good Hope. Two ostriches walk on the roadside; others stroll peacefully on the stony beach. Seagulls, seals and cormorants confidently heat on the huge rocks whereas normally cheeky baboons hide in the greenery.

A steep path leads us up to the old lighthouse which guides the ships rounding the cape. The local fynbos vegetation amazes with the unprecedented diversity of plant species. Among the blooming exotic plants I also notice flowers familiar from our balconies or florists- for example huge red geraniums. One could spend the whole day on the Cape Peninsula observing strange plants, hiking along the coast or meditating on the rocky beach.

Once again, we set out on the road enticed by the idea of the wine paradise Franschhoek. It is well worth taking a little break in one of the suburbs of Cape Town to enjoy the lazy life in False Bay. In the Collectables Café in Muizenberg a coffee place meets an antique shop. Strengthened by a strong black coffee, we then wander though time in the shop. We look at the inscriptions on the rusty boards, examine the old yellowed photos and try to guess the purpose of some of the exhibited home tools. After a short visit, we leave Muizenberg enchanted by the relaxed surfer atmosphere.

Tučniaky zo Šimonovho mesta

Na ceste k Mysu dobrej nádeje nás zvedie mesto pomenované po Šimonovi- Simon´s Town. Pozdĺž vyvýšenej drevenej promenády hľadáme v kríkoch učupené vzácne tučniaky africké, ktoré sú oveľa menšie ako ich príbuzní z Antarktídy. Postupne objavujeme introvertných jednotlivcov, odpočívajúcich osamote, zamilované páriky ale aj celú kolóniu skupinovo predvádzajúcu každoročné rituály na pláži Foxy. Niektoré sa ťarbavo prechádzajú po pláži, iné sa oddane hádžu do vĺn oceánu a všetky akurát strácajú šedé chumáče peria. Na obľúbené miesta na pevnine prichádzajú nielen počas výmeny peria ale aj počas hniezdenia.

Mys dobrej nádeje

Pred vstupnou bránou do národného parku Table Mountain National Park už zrána čaká narastajúca kolóna áut. Po zaplatení vstupného (320 Juhoafrických randov za osobu) cestujeme ešte asi pätnásť minút k Mysu dobrej nádeje. Pri ceste vykračujú dva pštrosy, ďalšie sa pokojne prechádzajú po pláži. V kríkoch sa skrývajú paviány, na skalách sa vyhrievajú čajky, tulene a kormorány. Strmou cestou vykračujeme k majáku upozorňujúceho lode obchádzajúce mys.

Miestna vegetácia fynbos ohuruje nevídaným bohatstvom rastlinných druhov. Medzi kvitnúcou exotikou zazriem aj kvety známe z našich balkónov či kvetinárstiev- napríklad obrovské červené muškáty. Na Kapskom polostrove by sa dal stráviť aj celý deň pozorovaním zvláštnych rastlín, turistikou pozdĺž pobrežia, či meditatívnym posedávaním na kamenistej pláži.

My sa opäť vydávame na cesty navnadení predstavou vínneho raja v mestečku Franschhoek. Prechádzame aj falošným zálivom a mestečkom Muizenberg, jedným z predmestí Kapského mesta. V kaviarni spojenej so starožitníctvom Collectables Café Muizenberg sa nielenže posilníme silnou čiernou kávou, ale aj zatúlame v čase. Skúmame nápisy na zhrdzavených tabuliach, prezeráme si staré zažltnuté fotky, snažíme sa uhádnuť účel niektorých z pôvodného domáceho náradia. Po krátkej návšteve opúšťame Muizenberg očarení pohodovou surferskou atmosférou.
