Rosette

 

It only occurs to us in the morning that even after it got dark, we did not see the group of Turkish tourists with their guide returning from the mountains. The receptionist of the Hermit-Woods campsite tells us later the news. The group came back to the campsite late at night completely exhausted in the heaviest downpour. In the morning it is still raining heavily, so we try to find an alternative program for a rainy day, preferably on the way to our next stop - Giant Castle National Reserve.

Somewhere between the Garden Castle and Giant Castle reserves lies the small village of Rosetta with a cosy rustic wine cellar (Old Main Road, R103). The pub and a small regional grocery store are family businesses with a long tradition. It surprises us with the large selection of South African wines but also with the enthusiasm and wide sommelier knowledge of its owners. You can find a suitable accompaniment (for example cheese, spread or pesto) for each bottle of wine in a small nearby grocery store. What´s more, each of these has an individual story of its regional origin.

An experienced and very nice winemaker explains to us how the South African speciality grape Pinotage was cultivated. It is a cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsault vines. At once we can recognise the smoky, woody, leathery taste (Pinot Noir) and the flavour of wood berries (Cinsault). Pinotage embodies a unique combination of flavours which we want to experience again and again, also after coming back to Europe. The winemaker tells us about South African winemakers who flocked to Europe after the end of apartheid to gain new experiences. The St. African winegrowers discovered that on the long transport routes (e.g. to Europe) their wines acquired new flavours. The winemaker evaluates coexistence in South Africa very positively. Her best friends also include people of colour. She loves playing football where she learned the ZULU language – just as her son did.

We buy a special organic wine in which Roiboos branches instead of sulphates were added and walk directly to our accommodation just nearby. We find our overnight stay thanks to Steve, who we met at the winery, and he spontaneously offers us a bed in one of his bungalows. We enjoy the marvellous view from our terrace of a green meadow and trees growing around a small river. The sheep graze in the distance and Steve drives across the pasture in the rain in his small toy-like car.

We sit on the steps under the roof for a long time and listen to the rain. In addition to the wine, the rain, and good food from the small grocery store, Steve´s schnauzer also keeps us company.

Gurmánsky zážitok v Rosette

Až ráno nám napadne, že sme večer ani po zotmení nevideli z hôr schádzať skupinku tureckých turistov s ich horským vodcom. Recepčná kempingu Hermit-Woods nám neskôr hovorí, že skupina prišla do kempingu v najväčšom lejaku až okolo desiatej večer. Ráno ešte stále výdatne prší, a tak sa snažíme nájsť alternatívu na upršaný deň, najlepšie priamo na ceste do ďalšieho stanovišťa- Giant Castle.

Kdesi uprostred medzi rezerváciami Garden Castle a Giant Castle objavíme malú dedinku Rosetta s útulnou rustikálnou vínnou pivničkou (Old Main Road, R103). Pivnička aj malý obchodík s regionálnymi potravinami sú rodinné podniky s dlhoročnou tradíciou. Prekvapí nás veľký výber juhoafrických vín, ale aj zapálenie a someliérske znalosti jej majiteľov. V malom obchodíku s vyberanými potravinami sa dá ku každej fľaši vína nájsť vhodný doplnok (syr, nátierka či pesto) a ku každej potravine existuje individuálny príbeh.

Skúsená a veľmi milá vinárka nám vysvetľuje, že juhoafrická špecialita Pinotage vznikla krížením vínnej révy Pinot Noir × Cinsault. Odrazu vieme od seba rozlíšiť dymovo, drevnato, koženú chuť (Pinot Noir) a príchuť lesných plodov (Cinsault). Pinotage je pre nás jedinečnou kombináciou chutí. Túžime si ju pripomínať zas a znova aj po návrate do Európy. Vinárka nám rozpráva, že juhoafrickí vinári po skončení apartheidu húfne odchádzali do Európy zbierať nové skúsenosti. Zistili napríklad aj to, že exportom ich vína nadobúdajú celkom nové chute. Vinárka spolunažívanie v Južnej Afrike hodnotí veľmi pozitívne. Aj jej najlepší priatelia sú people of colour. Veľmi rada hrá futbal a cez futbal sa naučila aj reč ZULU, rovnako ako aj jej syn.

Kupujeme si organické víno, do ktorého sa namiesto sulfátov dávajú konáriky Roiboosu a odchádzame prencovať k susedovi Stevovi. Narýchlo nám ponúkne ubytovanie v jednom z jeho malých domčekov. Steve, zdá sa, taktiež celý deň popíjal svoje obľúbené víno, koniec koncov naše zoznámenie prebehne vo vinárničke. Z terasy Stevovho domčeka máme výhľad na zelenú lúku a stromy rastúce okolo malej riečky. Obďaleč sa pasú ovce a Steve sa v daždi po pastvinách preháňa na malom autíčku.

Dlho sedíme na schodíkoch pod strechou a načúvame dažďu. Okrem vína a meditatívne klopkajúceho dažďa nám robí spoločnosť aj Stevov fúzač.
