The Royal Natal National Park

 

After a short history lesson at Giants Castle Reserve we move on to the next station of The Drakensberg – Royal Natal National Park.The Mahai campsite offers enough space for tents and caravans, which makes it cheaper and therefore very popular as well. In the second campsite, Thendele, only lodges with thatched-roofs can be rented (similar to Giants Castle). Fortunately, the day before New Year´s Eve, we find a vacant place at Mahai campsite, although it´s full of local tourists. 

Due to dark clouds we hurry to the parking lot below the Thendele campsite. There starts The Tugela Gorge Trail leading to one of the most remarkable rock formations in The Drakensberg called The Amphitheater. The hikers have to register with the one volunteer working at the parking lot near the beginning of the trail. 

 

It feels nearly like being in a fairyland here. You would expect a dragon to jump out from behind the next boulder spewing fire at you at any moment. Gradually, phenomenal rock formations, folded like a ruffled renaissance robe, emerge on the horizon. So this is the long awaited Amphitheater. The weather in the Drakensberg is very changeable.  Thick dark rain clouds begin to approach us from behind The Amphitheater and we decide to return to the campsite when the rain increases. 

We feel somehow observed in all South African campsites. It feels as if, in the eyes of local tourists, we would belong to some rare suspicious type of people who need to be “checked out” by a “selected delegate”. Maybe it´s just a local custom, a sign of hospitality or friendship, that also this time one of our neighbours approaches us. 

He introduces himself as Hasi and asks about our origins as well as our plans in South Africa. He explains his wish to travel to Europe with his family. But the plan is unrealistic because of his three kids and the expensive euro. So he and his family decided to spend New Year´s Eve, same as the last year, in the South African mountains. For dinner they are preparing a traditional barbecue braai and they will enjoy the evening together. Hasi and his family start barbecuing as we try to fall asleep in our roof tents. Loud laughter and mumbling as well as the smell of burning meat accompany us to our dreams. 

 

Nezabudnuteľné kulisy v Národnom parku Royal Natal

Po malej lekcii dejepisu v Giants Castle Reserve sa presúvame do ďalšieho stanoviska Dračích hôr- do Národného parku Royal Natal. Kemping Mahai je vyhradený pre stany a karavany, vďaka čomu je lacnejší a tým pádom aj mimoriadne obľúbený. V druhom kempingu Thendele sa dajú prenajať len domčeky so slamenými strechami- lodges, podobne ako v Giants Castle. Podarí sa nám nájsť voľné miesto v kempingu Mahai, ktorý je deň pred Silvestrom preplnený hlavne miestnymi turistami.

Ponáhľame sa k parkovisku pod kempingom Thendele. Neďaleko začína turistický chodník Tugela Gorge Trail vedúci k jednému z najpozoruhodnejších skalných útvarov Dračích hôr nazývanému Amfiteáter -Amphitheatre. Na parkovisku sa musíme zaregistrovať u jedného dobrovoľníka a vzápätí rezkým krokom vyrážame na túru.

V Dračích horách sa cítime ako v rozprávkovej krajine. Čakáme, že na nás každú chvíľu spoza guľatých balvanov vybehne drak chrliaci oheň. Postupne sa na horizonte vynoria fenomenálne skalnaté útvary poskladané ako záhyby nariasených šiat- dlhoočakávaný Amfiteáter. Počasie v Dračích horách je veľmi premenlivé a spoza Amfiteátra začínajú vykúkať husté tmavé dažďové mraky. S pribúdajúcimi dažďovými kvapkami sa otáčame a načas vraciame do kempingu. 

 

V juhoafrických kempingoch sa cítime pod drobnohľadom. Akoby sme v očiach miestnych turistov patrili k nejakému zriedkavému podozrivému druhu turistov, na ktorých si treba posvietiť. Možno sú to len miestne zvyky, prejav pohostinnosti či priateľstva, no podobne ako v Swadini Forever Resort k nám aj tentokrát podíde jeden z našich susedov aj so synom. 

Predstaví sa ako Hasi a vypytuje na náš pôvod, aj na naše plány v Južnej Afrike. Hovorí, ako rád by šiel s rodinou na výlet do Európy, no pri troch deťoch a drahom eure im to akosi nevychádza. A tak, podobne ako predchádzajúce roky, trávia Silvester v juhoafrických horách. Na večeru si pripravia tradičné barbecue nazývané aj braai. Hasi s rodinou začína grilovať už keď sa my zaspávame v stanoch na streche auta na pozadí hlasného smiechu a mrmlania.
