The flight from Port Elisabeth to Johannesburg takes about one and a half hours. Mr. Jabulani from Bushlore car rental picks us up directly from the airport. He struggles to briefly answer our curious questions in his hoarse voice. Is Jo-Burg currently safe? “No, there is a lot of crime in the city,” replies Mr. Jabulani without any sign of hesitation.
Later on at the rental shop he explains in detail how to change a tire on a Toyota Hilux 4x4, where to find a folding table or chair or various kitchen utensils. This car becomes our home and means of transport for the next sixteen days. “You are in Africa guys, everything is possible in here,” smirks our “tutor” and adds that we should never take aromatic fruits such as mangoes, bananas or pineapples into the National Parks with us. Everything must be removed from the ground immediately due to scorpions and snakes. Mr. Jabulani smiles mysteriously at the end of the lecture and wishes us a happy trip with his own special humour: “Drive and arrive!”
A slight shiver overcomes us as we look at the framed photos/ newspaper clippings hanging on the walls of the car rental´s interior. In the first one a herd of elephants turns our Toyota Hilux upside down, in the other one the car is buried in some kind of swamp.
After the initial tension, we easily get to the Agterplaas Hotel, which is located in the green and quiet part of Melville District. The Victorian-style villas, family homes and hostels in Melville are surrounded by massive walls under high voltage. The locals created secret sidewalks between the neighbouring houses, which connect their homes quickly with their favourite streets, such as 7th Street.
7th Street is especially popular among students from the nearby University of Johannesburg. It has become a shopping paradise for tourists due to its select small shops and modern restaurants. It is about a kilometre long and ends abruptly like an artificially made scene from “The Truman Show”. We are lured by the charm of the independent bookstore Bookdealers, founded thirty years ago in the suburbs of Yeoville. Its co-owner Lorika gently holds und browses with a surprised expression through a thin poetry book Stranger to Europe written by Guy Butler, which I found in the poetry section.
The staff of the Agterplaas Hotel are like one big family and they treat us as if we were a part of it. Every day they bake fresh bread for breakfast and chat with us about God and the world. One of its managers, Santie, gives us important advice before we start our journey to the Kruger National Park. “Never get out of the car while travelling through the national park, a cheetah or a leopard could be hidden in the bushes.” Strengthened by a large vegetable omelette, we head for the first stop in the Kruger National Park – Skukuza.

Z mesta Port Elisabeth do Johannesburgu letíme približne jeden a pol hodiny. Na letisku nás vyzdvihne pán Jabulani z požičovne áut Bushlore. Počas jazdy sa chrapľavým hlasom snaží stručne zodpovedať naše zvedavé otázky. Či je Jo-Burg momentálne bezpečný? "Nie, v meste je veľa kriminality," odpovie pán Jabulani bez zaváhania.
V požičovni nám potom podrobne vysvetľuje, ako na Toyote Hilux 4x4 vymeniť pneumatiku, postaviť na streche stan, kde nájsť skladací stôl stoličky či kuchynské náradie. Toto auto sa stane na ďalších šestnásť dní naším domovom aj dopravným prostriedkom. "Tu ste v Afrike, tu je všetko možné," uškŕňa sa náš "tútor" a dopĺňa, že v žiadnom prípade neodporúča do Národných parkov so sebou nosiť aromatické ovocie ako mangá, banány či ananásy. Zo zeme treba kvôli škorpiónom a hadom okamžite všetko odpratať. Na záver prednášky sa ešte raz tajomne usmeje a zaželá nám s humorom jemu vlastným šťastnú cestu: "Drive and arrive!" Niekoľkokrát nasucho preglgneme, keď si prezeráme zarámované fotky a výstrižky z novín zdobiace interiér požičovne. Na jednej stádo slonov prevrátilo našu Toyotu naruby, na ďalšej zostalo auto zaborené v akýchsi močariskách.
Po počiatočnom napätí sa bez problémov dopravíme do hotela Agterplaas ležiaceho v zelenej a pokojnej štvrti Melville. Vilky postavené vo viktoriánskom štýle, rodinné domy i ubytovne sú v Melville oplotené vysokými múrmi pod vysokým napätím. Medzi susediacimi domami vznikli tajné chodníky, ktorými sa tunajší rýchlo a bezpečne dopravia napríklad na vychytenú ulicu 7th Street. Tá je posiata vyberanými drobnými obchodmi či hipsterskými podnikmi obľúbenými najmä medzi študentmi a študentkami neďalekej univerzity University of Johannesburg. Ulica je asi kilometer dlhá a končí sa ráznym sekom. Akoby to boli len filmové kulisy pre zahraničných turistov a turistky. Umelo vytvorený bezpečný svet, kde sa dajú dobre míňať peniaze.
Nás svojím šarmom zláka nezávislé kníhkupectvo Bookdealers založené pred tridsiatimi rokmi na predmestí Yeoville. V súčasnosti sa kníhkupectvo len v Johannesburgu rozrástlo na niekoľko pobočiek, pričom jedna z nich je práve na 7th Street. Jeho spolumajiteľka Lorika prekvapene otáča v rukách útlu zbierku poézie Stranger to Europe od Guya Butlera, ktorú náhodne objavím v tomto knižnom raji.
Zamestnanci a zamestnankyne hotela Agterplaas sú ako jedna veľká rodina. Chyžná každý deň pečie čerstvý chlieb a na želanie vyčaruje veľkolepé a chutné raňajky. Jeho manažérka Santie nám pred cestou do Krugerovho národného parku dáva rady na prežitie. "Nikdy vystupujte počas cesty cez národný park z auta, v kríkoch môže byť skrytý lev, gepard alebo leopard." Posilnení veľkou zeleninovou omeletou vyrážame na dlhú cestu do prvého stanoviska Krugerovho národného parku- Skukuza.
