The socialistic architecture of the smaller Berlin airport Schönefeld suddenly reminds us of some Slovak train stations. It´s nearly like being at home. This old confidential feeling- that we landed good.
The airport Schönefeld reached the peak of its glory during the „East-Berlin-period“. One could have flown to the favourite destinations in the former Eastern Bloc.

How come, that the Berliners can talk about „airport-issues“ for hours? Another famous Berlin airport Tempelhof lies just 5 km on the south from the city center. It was closed after the successful referendum in 2009.

Our hosts Armin and Christine moved to the city district called Tempelhof approximately one year ago. It´s difficult to get used to the new surroundings after years spent in the favorite quarter „Friedrichshain“.
One could have found spacious & low priced flats also in districts as „Friedrichshain“ ten years ago. The avarage of working people are being diplaced due to gentrification from their districts to the suburbs. Armin and Christine consider the gentrification topic quite critically. However, they admit at the same time, that they contribute to it as well.
At first
glance, the Berlins facade invoke an impression of functional austerity. The walls
of subway stations are often tiled yellow or green. „I feel like in
a fresh autopsy room,“ mumbles my friend Aca, after I was trying to
explain her the hidden aim of this "Berlin look".
Although the drug scene was removed from „Bahnhof ZOO“ to the other parts of the city some time ago, one can still find a bunch of drug addicted or homeless people hanging around the railway bridge.

53-year-old Christiane F, the main character of the book „We childen from Bahnhof Zoo“, published in 2013 her second biography. She admitted in an interview with the daily newspaper „Die Welt“, that she is slowly dying from liver cirrhosis. But she is not afraid of death, she intimately knows it, since she was twelve.
Most of the Berlin stations raised its own faithful companions. You can always find a man in a blue anorak sitting on the one of the underground benches at station Friedrichstraße. He is holding a bottle with a yellow liquid in his right hand. I´m watching him as he is swinging with it from side to side in a regular rhythm, crossing one leg over the other - very elegantly and concentrated, as if he could saw his fortune inside the yellow fluid. Behind him shine the yellow tiles. Optimistically and with the irony of fate.

While
observing the big windows of the subway printed with pictograms of the Brandenburg
Gate, Aca complains about the perspective error: „The columns look strange“, she
points at one of them and shakes of the head.
Aca is not the
only one, who is not quite satisfied with the misshapen pictogram. Two graphic
designers Schuster and Karakus have already proposed its redesign. Even though
they would do it for free, they haven´t gotten understanding from the management
of the Berlin public transport. It may be, that the managers are right. The imperfect pictogram
of the Brandenburg Gate is a very suitable description of the ragged character of this
city.
Socialistická
architektúra menšieho berlínskeho letiska Schönefeld nám okamžite pripomenie
niektoré slovenské vlakové stanice. Je tu. Ten starý známy a dôverný pocit
domova. Dobre sme pristáli.
Letisko
obvodu Tempelhof.
chceli v metre zaujať turistov a turistky aspoň farbami kachličiek,
keď už na drahé lustre nevydalo.
Drogová scéna
sa v dôsledku častých policajných zásahov už dávno presunula zo Stanice
ZOO do iných mestských častí.
hrdinke knihy „My deti zo stanice ZOO“ Christiane F. vyšla v roku 2013 už druhá
vetrovke. Má elegantne preloženú nohu cez nohu a pravou rukou pokyvkáva
v pravidelnom rytme kyvadla fľašou so žltkastým obsahom. V nezmenenej
pozícii a minimálne odvčera.
Sledujeme ju
cez okná metra potlačené početnými piktogramami Branderburskej brány. Aca sa
rozčuľuje nad chybou v perspektíve: „Tie stĺpy sú nejaké čudné“, ukazuje prstom
na jeden z nich a krúti pritom hlavou.
Aca nie je
jediná, ktorá krčí nosom nad pokriveným piktogramom. Dvaja grafickí dizajnéri
Schuster a Karakus už bezplatne navrhli jeho redizajn. No nedočkali sa
pochopenia zo strany vedenia Berlínskej verejnej dopravy. Vraj práve nedokonalý
piktogram Brandenburskej brány najlepšie vystihuje nevycibrený charakter Berlína.
